In a development that is good news for tuberculosis patients, PD Hinduja Hospital will soon be establishing the Hinduja Institute for Medical Research and Training (HIMAT) for better research work in issues related to infectious diseases. The Division of AIDS, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will assist in training and scientific exchanges for the institute.

Adding another feather to its hat, the hospital signed Letter of Intent (LOI) the Division of AIDS, NIAID on Saturday.

“This LOI between the two entities will facilitate strengthening of clinical research capabilities in India through concerted training and research activities,” said Gautam Khanna, chief executive officer of the hospital who signed LOU Carl Dieffenbach, director, The Division of AIDS (NIAID, NIH).

The hospital is one of the pioneers in providing high-quality treatment of TB patients.

The hospital has undertaken more than 35 international research projects to the research of the infectious disease.

Vinoo Hinduja, managing trustee of the hospital, said, “It would provide a platform for United States and Indian scientists to work together to transform healthcare in six core disease areas — cardiac sciences, neuroscience and mental health, diabetes, pulmonary medicine, oncology and musculoskeletal/trauma along with infectious and chronic diseases.”

“The research work would be focused on the TB rapid diagnosis to successful treatment of patients with extreme drug resistant and multiple drug resistant TB patients,” Mr Hinduja further added.
