Despite several measures being in place to prevent flooding at spots in the city that are prone to waterlogging this monsoon, Hindmata at Dadar and the area outside Parel station witnessed severe flooding for 35 minutes at about 4 pm on Friday afternoon. This led to severe traffic jams at Hindmata, and traffic had to be diverted from there between 3.55 and 4.40 pm on Tuesday.
Civic officials have attributed this flooding to heavy rainfall during the half hour window, when the city was also experiencing high tide of about 4.42 metres, at 3.02 pm.
A civic official from the BMC’s disaster management department said, “Floodgates have to be closed for three hours during the high tide, so that sea water does not enter the city. During this period, no water comes into the city from the sea or goes out of the city into the sea.” As soon as water began to accumulate at Hindmata, two pumps from the Britannia pumping station were made operational and traffic was normalised.
Speaking about these flood-prone areas, a senior civic official said, “Both Parel and Hindamata are low-lying areas, and there is little we can do to avert this kind of flooding for short periods, if rain is accompanied with high tide.”
The city will also experience a high tide of 4.35 metres on Saturday at 3.43 pm and a high tide of 4.24 meters at 4.28 pm on Sunday, even as the IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall for the next two days.
