Hema Upadhyay murder case: Sessions Court rejects Chintan’s bail plea, again

The Dindoshi sessions court on Monday rejected the bail plea made by artist Chintan Upadhyay, who is in judicial custody along with four others in connection with the double murder case of his estranged wife Hema and her lawyer Haresh Bhambhani.

The bail application was tabled in court number eight on February 15 and since then it was the fifth hearing on Monday, in which Justice S.K. Quazi rejected the bail plea. The bail plea of Chintan was rejected on grounds like the chargesheet not being submitted yet and the main accused in the double murder case, Vidyadhar Rajbhar, being at large. Even as the police investigation in the case is on, on February 26, the prosecution made comments in court that Chintan was behind the murder conspiracy of his wife Hema and her lawyer.

The prosecutor informed the court that Call Data Records (CDR) of Chintan and main accused Vidyadhar had confirmed the two met in Chembur.

Reacting to the order, Gope Bhambai, brother of Haresh, said, “God is great and justice will be done.”

Sanchu Menon, a family friend of Hema, while talking to this newspaper said, “The bail application wasn’t filed to ask for Chintan’s bail, but Chintan just wanted to know what police has against him through this bail application. This is just a start and we won’t stop. We will go till the Supreme Court for justice.”

The judge allowed advocate Kadar Sayani to argue on behalf of Borivali Bar Association, to help the prosecutor on behalf of Haresh’s family. After the order, Mr Sayani said, “Truth has prevailed. This is the beginning and I will fight for the unfortunate death of a lawyer till the end.”

On February 26, public prosecutor Datta Mudiganti had informed the court it was Chintan who called up and spoke to his house help on December 12 after Hema went missing, while in his statement Chintan had claimed he had received a call from the help.
