Three months prior to her murder, Hema Upadhyay was scared of her estranged husband Chintan’s ways and had confided in her brother Manish Hirani that he could do something to her. This was revealed in a statement of Mr Hirani, which is part of the chargesheet filed by the Kandivali police in the double murder case of Hema and her lawyer Haresh Bhambani.
Mr Hirani’s statements revealed that he was visiting Mumbai in September 2015 when his sister told him that Chintan could do something to her for the ownership of their Juhu flat. Hema then informed her housing society in September and made Mr Hirani a nominee of the flat. The statement also says that Chintan had extramarital affairs and Hema was upset with him.
The 1,658-page chargesheet also includes the statements of few fibre artists, close aides of Chintan and his domestic help from Jaipur who had confirmed Vidyadhar’s visit to Chintan’s father’s house in the first week of December 2015. To cement the fact that Vidyadhar had visited Jaipur and the double murder of Hema and Haresh was the result of the conspiracy between Chintan and Vidyadhar, the police has attached a statement of a Jaipur-based hotel manager confirmed that Vidyadhar, along with two others i.e. Sadhu and Vijay, had stayed in his hotel for two days.
The police has also attached statements of two Bengaluru-based persons who had informed that chloroform worth Rs 565 was purchased. Vidyadhar visited Bengaluru with an aide in an Indigo flight and the police has attached the statement of the booking agent to confirm the role of Vidyadhar in the twin murder. The chargesheet also includes the statement of one auto rickshaw driver who mentioned that late on the night of December 11, he had noticed that tempo driver Vijay was standing outside Vidyadhar’s chawl and he with three others were trying to load heavy cardboard boxes on to the tempo. The chargesheet also revealed another fact that lawyer Haresh had left his home at 6.30 pm on December 11 saying that he was going to visit Hema and later when his daughter Anita called him at around 8.30 pm he said that he was crossing Malad. He said they were on their way to Vidyadhar’s place. When Haresh did not return until 12.30 am, his daughter dialed his and Hema’s numbers but both were switched off.
She also dialled Haresh’s alternate number which was ringing, but it was switched off around 4.30 am. The chargesheet includes statements of both the daughters of Haresh, along with his son-in-law, wife and nephew’s statements.
