The judicial custody of all five accused in the murder case of artist Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Haresh Bhambani has been extended till February 22. Earlier, as per the routine juridical custody process, they were produced in court on January 25. All the accused witnessed the court proceedings via video conferencing from Thane jail. During the court proceedings, Hema’s estranged husband Chintan Upadhyay, an artist, informed the court that he was suffering from a backache. The magistrate of Borivali metropolitan magistrate court took note, and ensured that action would be taken. Earlier, on January 21, Chintan had filed an application in the high court about his backache and the high court had directed the jail authorities to provide him a blanket, bed sheet and pillow.

A friend of Chintan, while talking to The Asian Age, said that they had visited him in jail on February 1, and he was in severe pain. The friend had advised Chintan to inform the magistrate about it. Chintan has been suffering from spondylitis for long and his treatment was going on when he was taken into custody. While meeting his friends Chintan had informed them that though he had been receiving painkillers from jail authorities, he had not been getting any relief.

In court number 17, while listening to the arguments about Chintan’s application that the flat and studio be sealed, the magistrate reserved the order for Tuesday. Earlier, on January 25, Chintan had applied for the Juhu-based flat and Hema’s

Andheri-based studio to be sealed.
