Hardik Patel puts his weight behind Marathas’ stir

Even though the Maratha community has neither asked for support from nor invited any established leader of any other community to join their protest, Hardik Patel — the leader of the Patidar community from Gujarat — has offered his support to the cause of the Marathas and his desire to join their agitation.

In an interview given to a Marathi news channel on Wednesday, Mr Patel compared the Marathas’ morchas with those of the Patidar community held in Gujarat last year, which made him a national leader almost overnight.

“The Marathas’ protest is nothing but a morcha organised by farmers. The poor farmers are joining the morchas, which is similar to the case of the Patidars,” said the 23-year-old.

“I would like to join the Maratha protest, but I will not share the stage as their leader. Instead, I will participate as a karyakarta (party worker),” he added.

He also said, “The BJP will go to any extent to remain in power and the Maratha community should hence adopt caution while dealing with the BJP.”
