The Harbour line trains towards Panvel were delayed for about an hour when a man died of electrocution on a CST-Panvel local at Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Nagar during peak evening hours, leading to 30 services being cancelled.
The man was identified as Badru Yadav (28), a resident of Wadala. Although, it was unclear as to what circumstances led to the accident, officials said they would look into all possibilities.
“We cannot confirm or deny if the man jumped on the roof of the train from the over-bridge or fell accidentally, but according to eyewitnesses, the man was on the foot over-bridge towards the CST end and jumped on to the roof of the train,” said a GRP official on condition of anonymity.
The Harbour line was converted from Direct Current of 1,500 volts to Alternate Current of 25,000 volts back in June, making it a very dangerous prospect to come close to the overhead wires.
Commuters such as Annapurni Hariharan, a resident of GTB Nagar, said that she was on her way from CST to her home when she was stuck in the train for over an hour. “Firstly, the 7.30 pm train came only after 8.30 pm and it was running at a snail’s pace to reach GTB,” said Ms Hariharan.
The trains were shut from 6.38 pm to 7.45 pm and were running a good 45 minutes late.
