Even as the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) issued a statement asserting that the National Green Tribunal hearing on the car depot for the Metro-3 corridor at Aarey Colony was in its favour, environmentalists said they would continue to protest.
The MMRC in a statement had said, “National Green Tribunal (NGT) during the hearing in Pune on Wednesday declared that restriction on new project is limited to 100 metres only from the boundary of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and there are no restraining orders against metro car depot. This is positive development for Metro-3 project. NGT has further asked MMRC to present a compilation of areas consumed in depots of Delhi, Kolkata and other Metros.”
Stalin Dayanand of Vanashakti NGO, said, “The MMRC has been spreading false propaganda by issuing statement and putting words in the mouth of the judge of NGT. We will personally bring the statement to the notice of the NGT that the MMRC has been issuing without any concrete backup. I would like to clarify that no such order has been passed as the matter is still being heard. Also, the MMRC demand for land has gone down to 8 hectares from the earlier demand of 30 and 20 hectares. This proves they are at fault.”
The next hearing is scheduled for the same on January 19, 2016.A proposal for a car depot in Aarey Colony by the MMRC has been in controversy for months now after several environmentalists and activists had challenged the MMRC proposal in NGT.
