The state government has spent Rs 3 crore on the justice (Rtd) M.G. Gaikwad committee — constituted to conduct an inquiry into an alleged Rs 6,000 crore scam in the tribal welfare department — in the past two-and-a-half years over remuneration and the office administration expenses. The scam for the probe of which the committee was constituted was revealed during the tenure of tribal minister Vijaykumar Gavit.
The state has given the committee its sixth and last extension of six months and asked it to submit its report within this period.
It has been alleged that money was siphoned off during 2004-09 in the purchase of various items for curbing malnutrition, distribution of milch animals to tribals, among others.
Mr Gavit, now a BJP MLA, held the tribal welfare portfolio in the Congress-NCP government as a NCP MLA. A government resolution extending the term of Justice (retd) Gaikwad committee by six months, starting from July 15, was issued on September 26.
Rajgopal Deora, principal secretary to tribal welfare department, said the committee had been given six months extension for the sixth time.
“The state has spent more than Rs 3 crore during the last two and half years over remuneration of the staff of the commission as well as office expenses.”
