To ensure quick and just police action on complaints, the Maharashtra government has introduced a novel move.
Under this, the State government has directed the police department to file reports regarding the status of a complaint.
“The order has been given to assistant commissioner of police (ACP) of all areas wherein they have to file an Action Taken Report within three weeks of receiving any complaint,” said an officer. This report should also be provided to the complainant so that he knows how far his case has progressed.
The order also mentions that if an ACP or the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) receives a complaint, it needs to be registered at the local police station on the same day. “A written order will also have to be issued by them asking officers to begin investigation,” said an official.
Sources added that not complying with these orders would be inviting serious action. “If a report is not filed within the said period, the ACP will have to submit the details of the case to the Home Department mentioning why the complaint was not looked into and the Action Taken Report not filed,” he said.
Failing a probe, details of all such cases will be submitted to the additional home secretary and deputy secretary.
