In a bid to make schools safe and the environment friendly, the state government has issued a resolution restricting the use of any type of firecrackers on or around school premises. The order has exhorted schools and junior colleges to create awareness about the same among students as well as ensure that there is no cracker manufacturing work carried out in the periphery of the educational institutions too.
In light of the recent blast in a factory at Dombivali that left 12 people dead, the school education department felt that the presence of factories involved in manufacturing of dangerous products like firecrackers was unsafe for students and hence issued an order asking schools and junior colleges to ascertain that no such units were present in the vicinity of the institution. The order asks all schools and junior colleges to ensure that bursting of firecrackers on the institutions premises or its periphery by the students is also deterred. According to an official from the school education department from the Mumbai North, the aim was to ensure safety of children as well as ensure that the environment is clean.
“The responsibility of deterring students from bursting crackers is on the principals and managements of the schools and junior colleges. The education inspectors of all regions have been asked to ensure that the institutions in their regions comply with the order and collect a compliance report from them as soon as possible,” said the official.
Anil Bornare of a teachers’ organisation in the state Shikshak Bharati said that his organisation welcomed the move.
