Government to lift ban on hiring of teachers

Education minister Vinod Tawde has said that the ban on teacher recruitment that was implemented since 2012 will soon be lifted.

Education minister Vinod Tawde has said that the ban on teacher recruitment that was implemented since 2012 will soon be lifted. Mr Tawde said that the ban would be lifted after the sanch manyata was completed and excess teachers were assigned schools. The recruitment would then be undertaken for the vacant posts.

Sharing details of the meeting with the education minister, MLC Ramnath Mote said that on Friday he met Mr Tawde at Mantralaya and apprised him of the loss being suffered by students due to lack of teaching staff in many schools across the state. “Mr Tawde said that the announcement of lifting the ban on recruitment of teachers after completion of the sanch manyata would be announced in a day or two,” said Mr Mote.

He further added that after the Bombay high court had instructed the government to fill up vacant teaching posts, the state had complied and hired teachers in 2014. “However, the problem is not restricted to Mumbai only as thousands of posts across schools in the state have remained vacant, thus causing a lot of problem to students,” said Mr Mote. He said that in response to another petition filed by him recently, the high court had instructed the government to fill up vacant posts for the English, Mathematics and Science subjects.

However, contrary to the court order, the director of school education had issued a circular in January asking private managements to stop hiring teachers without the approval of the education department official concerned. Following this Mr Mote took up the issue with Mr Tawde and the talks have resulted in the minister agreeing to restart the teacher recruitment process.

“The lack of teachers was a major problem but with the decision to restart recruitment, school education in the state will improve,” said Anil Bornare, chairman of Shikshak Bharati, which has been petitioning the education department in this regard.
