Having received several complaints from air passengers with respect to charging more than the maximum retail price (MRP) and so on, Maharashtra’s legal metrology department has issued notice against two weighing scales at Mumbai airport after finding them faulty.

Acting upon passenger complaints, officials, inspected shops of airports and booked as many as 16 cases. At Mumbai airport, three cases were booked under violation of packaged commodities rules, 2011, for over charging. In another case, two weighting machines of Mumbai airport were issued notice for not showing exact weight and a total of nine machines from Pune and Aurangabad were confiscated. Mumbai airport sources said that due to faulty weighing machines, many a time, baggage limit of passengers exceeded the permitted limit which led them to pay extra charges to the airline for their baggage.

At Pune airport, four weighing machines of Air India, Jet Airways and Indigo Airlines were served notice for not showing exact weight. According to officials, airlines were not keeping 1/10th of weight for checking weighing scales as required by Maharashtra legal metrology rules. For all crimes as per metrology rules, a minimum penalty of Rs 2,000 is proposed within a set specific time.
