Good days ahead for cooperatives: Maharashtra CM

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the cooperatives sector would see better days but also lectured the management, workers and farmers to work for the betterment of the cooperatives sector

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the cooperatives sector would see better days but also lectured the management, workers and farmers to work for the betterment of the cooperatives sector in their own interest.

“The continuance of sugar factories is the need of the hour. Hence, the factories should be managed with the spirit of cooperation,” he said after inaugurating the crushing season in Vasantdada Cooperative Sugar Factory in Deola tehsil of Nashik on Monday.

Guardian minister Girish Mahajan, minister of state Dada Bhuse, MPs Harishchandra Chavan and Dr Subhash Bhamre, MLAs Seema Hire, Rahul Aher, Apurva Hiray and others were present.

Mr Fadnavis further said that if the cooperatives sector collapses, it would create a monopoly of the private sector. “This would be a loss to farmers. But if the cooperatives and private sector continue working, it would create competition and increase quality. Newer technologies could be used and it would help farmers,” he said.

“Board of directors, employees and farmers are the three factors of the sugar factory. The directors should manage effectively and see that the factory functions properly. It’s necessary to run the factory considering the welfare of the farmers and cooperative spirit. The employees should understand that they owe their existence to the factory. The ensuing three years are transitory and the workers should work with the inspiration that they have families to look after. The farmers too should understand that they get good prices for sugarcane because of the factories and should cooperate,” he said. The CM said that the government gave Rs 2,000 crore last year to bail out the sugar factories. “Fortunately, this year there was good price for sugar,” he said.

He observed that underhand dealings had caused problems in starting new projects. “This year, a large number of irrigation works would be completed while the water resources ministry had given sanction to many projects last year,” he stated.
