The Bombay high court has ordered the Mumbai Police to register a First Information Report (FIR) into the death of Haryana gangster Sandeep Gadoli, who was shot dead by a team of Gurgaon Police in a Mumbai hotel on February 7. The court was responding to a petition filed by Gadoli's brother Kuldeep Singh in which he claimed the alleged encounter was a fake one, and the Gurgaon Police had been given a 'supari' to eliminate Gadoli by a rival who is now a local politician in Gurgaon.

Police officials said that they are waiting for official documents after which they will file the FIR.

The order was delivered by a division bench of justices Ranjit More and V.L. Achilya on a writ petition. The petitioner claimed that it was a case of murder as the police did not give Gadoli an opportunity to surrender.

The Mumbai police crime branch unit 10, which had already an inquiry, has found that the Gurgaon police did not follow protocol when its team shot Gadoli dead in the secret encounter in an Andheri (east) hotel.

According to Gurgaon police the deceased opened fire at two constables injuring both, and in retaliation they shot him dead.

The Haryana government had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for Gadoli's arrest. He was wanted in 34 crime cases in Haryana including multiple cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, robbery, and kidnapping. His brother's petition alleged he was done in because of a fight over land in Gurgaon.
