Gang of eight held for faking robbery

The Thane police has arrested eight persons of a gang who reportedly made a profit by faking a robbery.

The Thane police has arrested eight persons of a gang who reportedly made a profit by faking a robbery. The police got a clue about the gang while investigating one of the ‘made up’ robbery incidents.

In January 1, a truck driver Ramdayal Chowdhari and cleaner Mohammad Rafique came to Shil-Daighar police station and narrated a story and lodged a complaint related to truck robbery. A truck carrying steel pipes weighing about 5.5 tonnes valued at '13.34 lakh was dispatched from a godown of a company at Bhiwandi in Thane for Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai. However, the truck did not reach the destination.

DCP Zone 1 Sachin Patil said, “They told us that there was a highway robbery wherein some miscreants waylaid the truck, pulled them out, tied them up and then fled with the truck containing the steel pipes. Our officials started investigation. We checked all the CCTVs near the area and on the routes mentioned by the complainants. We found discrepancies in the timings and actions as they narrated the story to us.”

He added, “Our police officers found them suspicious and kept an eye on their activity. We then decided to take them into custody and interrogate them. During interrogation, they revealed that they had ‘cooked up’ the story of robbery and that the truck was never waylaid and looted.”
