Stating that fundamentalism had reared its head again, international educationalist Dr Vastupal Parikh said that humans probably have lost their ability to differentiate between right and wrong.
He was speaking during the 22nd convocation ceremony of Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) on Friday. Vice chancellor Dr Manikrao Salunkhe was in the chair while minister of state for finance Deepak Kesarkar, registrar Prakash Atkare and others were present on the dais.
“People behave cruelly to each other in the name of race, religion, caste, colour and gender. The dangers of environmental degradation and loss of human values is frightening. Instead of becoming scared it’s necessary to seek inspiration to save the earth and save humanity,” he said.
He further said, “Instead of focussing on a career which gives money or power, students should focus on their inner voices. There is lasting happiness in following one’s heart.”
Dr Parikh lauded YCMOU and said that its scheme of reaching education to all sectors was unequalled in the world.
Dr Salunkhe said YCMOU was the only university offering 187 streams that gave the students the independence to choose their syllabus. “This year, about 26,000 students got admission to post graduation courses in Marathi, Hindi, English and Mathematics through collaboration with Shivaji University,” he said. The institution has over 4,000 study centres in Maharashtra.
