A Kozhikode-bound Indigo airlines flight from Dubai made an emergency landing at Mumbai airport, after a passenger allegedly got into a fight with the passengers and the crew on board. The passenger, a resident of Kozhikode, is reportedly mentally unstable and was travelling with his brother in the flight.

The incident occurred at 9 am, when the passenger allegedly started creating a ruckus and did not pay heed to warnings by the airline crew. The passenger has been identified as Ismail Parambbal (24). He was on his way home from Dubai. Officials said that he was employed with a private firm in Dubai for the last five years.

“The passenger suddenly started getting restless and turned violent since he did not like the couple sitting beside him. He added that a little while later, Parambbal got off his seat and started banging on the bathroom door. “The captain of the flight went to the washroom and the passenger then started banging on the door and calling the captain a criminal,” said an officer. He was allegedly shouting at other passengers too.

“A little before landing, a passenger seated on 5D (who was accompanied by his brother) suddenly started misbehaving with the crew. He jumped on the forward cart (which is used for food and onboard merchandise) and sat on it,” said the statement issued by Indigo airlines.

Following this, the Indigo airlines crew informed the captain-in-command and the lead crew. Sources said that while he did step down from the food cart, he started getting violent and also allegedly physically assaulted the other passengers.

“As a precautionary measure, the captain immediately informed the air traffic control (ATC) and the ground security staff about the situation onboard. The flight made the precautionary landing at the Mumbai airport where this passenger was handed over to the CISF for further investigations. The matter is now with the local authorities,” said Indigo airlines in its statement.

After disembarking, Parambbal and his brother were handed over to the Mumbai police. Sources said the officials sent Parambbal for a medical check-up as he is said to be mentally disturbed and have not filed any charges against him.
