The Chembur police has busted a gang of drug peddlers that was one of the main suppliers of cannabis in the city. Cops seized 40kg cannabis (ganja) from the five arrested accused. Officials informed that four of them belonged to the same family.
Acting on a tip-off that gang members would be travelling in a vehicle, police laid a trap for them at various locations in Chembur, especially traffic signals and junctions. On Wednesday, senior inspector Sandip Dal along with PI S.S. Sharma and PSI Sandip Sonwalkar were patrolling R.C. Church road near the monorail station. “At about 5 pm, we found a vehicle passing by the Beggars’ Home. It matched our description, and we stopped it,” said an officer. Upon inspection, officials found five blue plastic bags with packets of cannabis. “We immediately identified it as cannabis and when measured, it came up to 40kg. In the black market, this is worth around Rs 4 lakh,” the officer added.
The arrested accused have been identified as Kantu Pawar (31); Kantu’s brother, Raju Pawar (39); Raju’s wife, Kavita Pawar (35); Pintu Raju Pawar (23); and Rahul Chauhan (24). Upon questioning, they revealed that they had clientele across the city. “The arrested are among the biggest suppliers of the drug in the city,” said the official.
