Fire brigade to use mud to douse Kalyan dumpsite fire

Despite vigorous efforts by the fire brigade to control Kalyan’s Adharwadi dumping ground fire blazing in small pockets for over 24 hours, the fire brigade has now decided to use mud to douse the fire and cool the remains.
Even though there were three water tankers on the spot almost as soon as the fire was reported, on Tuesday, the chief fire officer Dilip Gund confirmed that the fire brigade has still been working on dousing the fire. “The severe wind in the area has made it difficult to contain the fire. The wind has also resulted in heavy smoke clouding the operations. Only water might not be able to help us completely cool the area, so we have decided to use mud as well,” said Mr Gund.
Along the lines of the fire at Deonar dumping ground earlier this year, a major fire broke out at the Adharwadi dumping ground at Kalyan at about 3.30 pm on Tuesday.
The fire occurred in several small pockets in the 4-acre dumping ground. About 14 fire engines and 12 water tankers were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control by Wednesday morning. As of Wednesday evening, five fire engines and three water tankers were still at work, trying to douse small pockets of the fire. However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
