A fire broke out in a two-storey wooden building in Mazgaon in South Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon. No death or injury was caused, according to fire brigade officials.

The officials said that the fire started on the second floor of the residential building, Bandookwala Apartments, around 12.30 pm. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a cylinder blast, even though investigations are still underway.

Chief fire officer P. Rahangdale said: “The wooden structure of the building aggravated the fire. Moreover, since the building is very old, residents had placed a layer of tar on the roof of the building to check leakage during the rains. That made our task very difficult, as tar burns with great intensity very quickly.”

Mr Rahangdale said the situation is the same with most old structures in South Mumbai that are on the brink of redevelopment. There is also no way that action can be taken against these buildings as they are either under litigation or do not have one particular owner.

The fire brigade immediately pressed eight fire engines and seven water tankers to the spot. There was also an accompanying ambulance for any emergencies. Even though the fire began on the second floor, it quickly spread to the other parts of the building due to the wood that was used to construct the structure. The fire was brought under control only after 3 pm. It was doused by 4.15 pm.
