The city witnessed two major fires on Monday, one at a slum in Mahim and the other at a hospital godown in Parel, but no casualties were reported.
The fire broke out at the godown in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial hospital in Parel at 4.35 pm and was brought under control at 5.42 pm. Five fire engines, three water tankers, one rescue van and one BA van were used by the fire brigade to bring the situation under control.
The godown is located on the ground floor of the hospital, which was crowded with patients and their families when the fire broke out. There was panic as there was smoke and smog everywhere. But the hospital doctors, nurses and other staff helped them to come out safely.
According to fire officials, the cause of the fire is not yet known, but prima facie it took place due to a short circuit. The real reason will be known only after proper investigation, said a fire official. However, all the goods in the godown was gutted in the fire.
At Mahim, the fire started around 11 am at Naya nagar slums, but was brought under control by 1 pm. Around 30-40 hutments were gutted in the fire but no casualties or injuries had occurred, a Mumbai fire brigade official said.
It took around two hours, five fire engines, two water tankers and one ambulance for the fire brigade to get situation under control at Mahim.
“We ran as soon as we saw flames coming out of a hutment and thankfully not many people were present or else it would have been a catastrophe,” said Saeed Sheikh, a slum dweller.
Many individuals from the Mahim slum complained that their valuables were stolen from their houses and were nowhere to be found after the fire was brought under control.
