Finance firm robbers spoke Marathi: Cops

The Navi Mumbai police investigating the robbery of around 23kg gold from a reputed gold finance company said it had procured the CCTV footage of the incident from the head office of the firm.

The Navi Mumbai police investigating the robbery of around 23kg gold from a reputed gold finance company said it had procured the CCTV footage of the incident from the head office of the firm.

The police, which has formed six teams to work on the case, on Sunday said it had got a few vital links in the case, on of which was that the robbers were speaking Marathi.

The police said it had to approach the head office of the finance firm in Kerala where the main server was installed for the footage videos, as the robbers had decamped with the booty after damaging the CCTV cameras and the digital video recorder (DVR) placed on the company premises.

On Saturday, five men made away with 23 kg of gold worth about Rs 6.3 crore from the office of Popular Gold Finance after threatening its employees at gunpoint. “After viewing the CCTV footage and interrogating the employees it has come to light that the accused were speaking Marathi,” said a police source.

“The five members were communicating with each other in Marathi and also hailing one another using numbers. Police officials have alerted every informer and have also started collecting details about gangs that speak Marathi,” said the source.

Police officials said that around 3.30 pm, five men wearing handkerchief masks had entered the office of Popular Gold Finance, situated opposite Seawood station.

“The accused allegedly entered the office and threatened everyone by brandishing guns and swords. One of them, also holding a gun, got hold of the keys of the locker from the manager of the company. He then collected all the jewellery kept in the locker — around 23kg gold and '9 lakh. After conducting a thorough check of all the drawers, and the cabin of the manager, he came out with the loot. Following this, two others from the gang went into the room where the DVR was kept, broke it and after seizing whatever footage videos they could find from the place, left in a Swift car,” said Prashant Khaire, DCP Zone 1 of Navi Mumbai.

“We have got some clues and are working on it. It’s the initial stage of the investigation, and so, we cannot reveal important details. However, our teams are hot on the heels of the accused and will arrest them soon,” he added.
