‘Fielding Chidambaram for Rajya Sabha is a wrong move’

Reacting to Congress’s decision to field former finance minister P. Chidambaram from Maharashtra for the Rajya Sabha, the Shiv Sena on Monday said the Congress has shot itself in its foot.

Reacting to Congress’s decision to field former finance minister P. Chidambaram from Maharashtra for the Rajya Sabha, the Shiv Sena on Monday said the Congress has shot itself in its foot.

The Sena reminded the Congress that Mr Chidambaram and his family are already under investigation of the Enforcement Directorate and his role in changing the government affidavit in the Ishrat Jahan case is also under question.

The Sena further said that while the move to bring Mr Chidambaram and Kapil Sibbal, two renowned lawyers to the Rajya Sabha was taken to counter BJP’s Subramanian Swamy, it would not succeed as Parliament is different from a courtroom.

“The Congress has decided to send Mr Chidambaram and Mr Sibbal to Rajya Sabha so that they will put forth a strong pitch for Congress. But is there anyone left to take Congress’s side in the country The party’s only agenda is to block important bills in Rajya Sabha by using its numerical strength,” the editorial published in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana on Monday said.

The editorial further said that the ED has sent Letters Rogatory (judicial requests) to UK and Singapore in connection with its money laundering probe in the Aircel-Maxis deal case and parallel investigations in the financial transactions of some companies belonging to friends of Mr Chidambaram’s son Karti.

“It has also been alleged that Mr Chidambaram amended the affidavit to drop references to Ishrat Jahan’s LeT link, in order to prove the ‘human bomb’ of LeT innocent. Considering all this, Congress has shot itself in the foot by foisting Chidambaram on Maharashtra. The answer to the question whether wisdom will dawn on Congress has come in the negative,” the editorial said.

The Shiv Sena also pointed out that Rajiv Shukla is also a Congress MP from Maharashtra in Rajya Sabha. “What Mr Shukla’s contribution was to Maharashtra is well-known to the Congress. All said and done, senior leaders enter the House of Elders,” the editorial said.
