Commuters using the Central Railway (CR) local trains were not too happy with the arrangement during the block undertaken to demolish Hancock bridge as three fourth of the services were being run only up to Dadar and Kurla and just one fourth up to Byculla.
Services were delayed by 20 minutes.The 18-hour block created confusion among the mainline commuters as the CR had announced that trains would be run up to Byculla and many had to get off at Kurla and Dadar itself.
Anil Kamble (45), a resident of Kalwa, who wanted to travel from Kurla to Byculla said he had to wait for at least 30 minutes for a Byculla train. “I thought they are running all the trains up to Byculla and waited at Kurla for a good 30 minutes before I got the train,” said Mr Kamble.
Railway officials said they could not run all the trains up to Byculla as it did not have the physical capacity to handle them. “We had to run 12 services per hour. Four trains were towards Dadar, four trains towards Kurla and four trains upto Byculla,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
Although the block was opened 20 minutes later, CR officials said it was because workers had to cut down the bridge into 60 pieces for smooth operation. The CR had to hire 650 men in total for the work.
150 services were cancelled but more cancellations were expected by late in the night and the first train left from CST to Asangoan at 7.17 pm.
