The Kalachowkie police have arrested a youth for allegedly murdering a young woman in cold blood Sunday evening in Parel in central Mumbai because she rejected his marriage proposal.
According to the Kalachowkie police, the incident occurred around 7.15 pm in front of Deepak Jyoti Co-operative Housing Society on G.D. Ambedkar road in Parel. The deceased has been identified as Ekta Talwalkar (25) and her murderer as Prasad Sawant (26). Talwalkar resided in a building at Dilai Road in the N.M. Joshi area of Lower Parel (west) while Mr Sawant was a resident of a building in Lalbaug in central Mumbai. Mr Sawant worked for an event management company.
A senior police officer said, “Mr Sawant and Talwalkar knew each other for 10 to 12 years. They had a love affair too. Talwalkar’s parents were opposed to their marriage and so, she distanced herself from Mr Sawant. Mr Sawant however lost his mind and decided to take revenge.”
Mr Sawant got Talwalkar to meet him at the spot after which he slit her throat with a knife. He was allegedly drunk at that point of time. “The woman died on the spot as she had lost a lot of blood,” said a police official. She was taken to the KEM Hospital but was declared dead on admission. It is learnt that Mr Sawant walked into the Kalachowkie police station and surrendered himself. Deputy commissioner of police, aone IV, Ashok Dudhe said, “The accused has been arrested. The murder has occurred over a failed love affair. We are investigating the case further.”
Talwalkar used to work for a travel and tourism company. Mr Sawant confessed to his crime. A case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him. The police have sent the body for a post mortem. The accused will be produced before a magistrate’s court on Monday. The police have conducted a medical test on him. He is presently kept at the Kalachowkie police station. The police are going through the call records of Mr Sawant as well as the deceased to find more information. A team of policemen and an officer conducted the panchnama at the spot and questioned people to find out if anyone witnessed the incident.
