Extortion ruled out in businessman shootout

The police has ruled out extortion as the trigger in the shootout case of 30-year-old Sion builder Jinesh Jain.

The police has ruled out extortion as the trigger in the shootout case of 30-year-old Sion builder Jinesh Jain.

Also, it is yet to establish the identities of the shooters, who were reportedly clad in burqa. The assailants fired at Mr Jain Friday evening in Sion and fled the spot.

While officials were informed by locals that the shooter fled the spot in an Alto car, as the incident took place late evening, the CCTV failed to show the number plate of the car owing to poor light.

A senior police official informed The Asian Age that the police will now collect all the CCTV footage in the area, as they could get a glimpse of the car in which the assailants fled in at least one of them.

Officials are also trying to get help from the RTO for details of all Alto cars in the area.

Police sources said Mr Jain, owner of Arihant Builders, has his office in the Trimurti society. The two shooters were wearing burqa, so the CCTV cameras could not capture their faces, they said.

Of the two rounds fired at Mr Jain, one hit his arm and the other his back. The duo fled the spot immediately after the shootout. Jain was immediately rushed to the hospital and his condition was said to be stable on Saturday.

Three to four teams from the crime branch, along with two teams from the Antop Hill police station, are working on the case.

On Saturday, the police took the statements of family and friends. Jain’s relatives have not named anyone as possible suspects.

Officials have ruled out the involvement of any gang in the shootout as Mr Jain never received any extortion calls.

Officials now believe that the reason for shootout could be business rivalry. Mr Jain had recently undertaken a SRA project in Everard Nagar and Suman Nagar. Also, officials are trying to find out if there were any family problems.

Navi Mumbai builder S.K. Lahoria was the last builder in recent times who was shot dead outside his office in Navi Mumbai in 2013. In 2014, a minor gangster had fired outside the office of film producer Karim Morani in Juhu.
