Expert to decide on release of water to Jayakwadi: NMC

The general body of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Saturday summoned a special meeting to study the issue of release of water to Jayakwadi.

The general body of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Saturday summoned a special meeting to study the issue of release of water to Jayakwadi.

During the meeting summoned by the mayor, leaders from Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP protested release of water to Jayakwadi. “It was then decided that a special water expert be nominated to study the issue and give recommendations.

The expert will study the command area and catchment area of Gangapur reservoir and give suggestions. Based on these suggestions, a fresh petition will be filed in the High Court,” deputy mayor Gurmeet Bagga told The Asian Age.

Senior Sena leader Ajay Boraste was the most vocal during the meeting and alleged that the issue was an attempt to destroy Nashik. “The largest number of suicides has occurred in Nashik area. There has been less rainfall this season and reservoirs have not filled up. We have already given water earlier.

Please don’t push us to breaking point. Already, there is a very real possibility of having only one time water in the city,” he said.

Mr Boraste further said that Sena had taken the lead in uniting political parties in the interest of Nashik, and had been successful in its mission. However, it was unfortunate that they had to summon a special general meeting to discuss the issue of water. “We have decided to hire an expert and look into the issue, after which, we will file a fresh petition,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, NMC is learnt to have started indirect water cuts. In the Cidco area, water is released at 4.30 am and stops within 15 to 20 minutes. Some stay awake to get their share while others do not get any water.

On this issue, Dy Mayor Bagga said that at least during Diwali, there would be no water cuts and water would be released twice a day.
