The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has postponed the exams for the post graduation degree and diploma courses after it was found that the institutions have failed to complete the academic days criteria set by the Medical Council of India. According to the university, while the post graduation degree exams will now be held from July 25, the exams for diploma courses will start from June 6.

According to a spokesperson from the university, the decision to postpone the exams that were to start from May 23 was taken by the Board of Examination (BoE) in an urgent meeting convened on Saturday. The meeting was presided by the vice-chancellor Dr Dilip Mhaiskar wherein the discussion revolved around the exams for post graduation courses.

“In 2013, as the issue of entrance exam for post graduation courses was being heard in the Supreme Court, admissions to both the degree and diploma the courses was delayed.

As per the MCI rules the academic session for the degree courses is 36 months and 24 months for the diploma courses. “Due to the delayed admissions, the colleges offering the course have been unable to achieve the criteria and hence the BoE unanimously decided to postpone both the exams,” said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that the decision was taken in the best interest of the students so that they do not suffer due to the inability of the colleges and institutions to complete the course. “The postponement will not only ensure compliance with the academic days rule of MCI but also ensure that the students are able to study the entire syllabus before appearing for the exams,” said the spokesperson adding that the same was agreed upon by the directorate of medical education and research, the regulating body for medical and dental courses in the state.

As a result, exams for the MD, MS and MSC exams and diploma courses thus stand postponed to July 25 and June 6.
