Ex-employee held for stealing gold
The Pydhonie police has traced and arrested one person from Hyderabad who allegedly fled from Mumbai after stealing gold ornaments collectively worth Rs 36 lakh from his employer’s factory in the Pydhonie area of south Mumbai last year. The police said it would not initiate action to recover the stolen valuables.
According to the Pydhonie police, accused Shrikanto Asta used to work for complainant Saifuddin Abdul Gafar Shaikh (66), along with 24 others in a small gold ornament-making unit on Abdul Rahman Marg in Pydhonie area.
On December 1 last year, Mr Shaikh gave Asta 22 karats and 1,505 grams of four gold bars to make gold ornaments out of it. He completed the work in 25 days and gave the ornaments to Mr Shaikh who kept it in the drawer of his cupboard in the unit. From January 28, Asta stopped reporting to work. When Shaikh enquired, his wife answered the phone and told him that her husband was sick and would be on leave for a few days.
A couple of days later Mr Shaikh opened the drawer and the valuables were missing. He questioned every employee, but they said they had no idea about it. Mr Shaikh then approached the Pydhonie police with a complaint. The police called Asta for questioning along with all other employees, but when he didn’t turn up despite repeated reminders the police started suspecting him.
