The city is all set to get hotter as the equinox (day and night of equal length) will increase the temperatures on Sunday.
The maximum temperature recorded in the suburbs on Saturday was 4 degrees above normal at 36.5 degrees Celsius. In South Mumbai, it was 33 degrees Celsius, which was 2 degrees above normal. A few regions in Maharashtra recorded 41 degrees Celsius, which was the highest recorded temperature in the region.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted clear skies on Sunday, with maximum temperature at 37 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature at 24 degrees Celsius.
According to the IMD, an anti-cyclone over the southern peninsula would increase the day and night temperatures. “Owing to this, the temperature will increase in the region for at least two to three days until the wind patterns change,” said V.K. Rajeev, director, western region, IMD.
In fact, the minimum temperatures recorded at both the weather stations were also above normal readings. In Colaba, the temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius, which was three degrees above normal. And at Santa cruz, it was 23.4 degrees Celsius, which was 2.1 degrees above normal.
The humidity was also low in the city with humidity levels at 54 per cent in South Mumbai and 32 per cent in the suburbs.
Equinox is an astronomical event when the earth’s equator passes through the centre of the sun, which occurs twice each year on March 20 and September 23. On equinox, the day and night are of approximately equal duration.
