Thousands of students seeking direct admission to the second year of engineering courses in city colleges were left stranded at the designated admission centres as officials at the centres claimed they were not aware that they had to conduct admissions because they had not received the link to the site that would enable them to do so.
With only two days for admission, students are panic-stricken and fear that they may miss out on a chance to secure a seat.
According to a student, who has completed the three-year diploma in mechanical engineering, the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) list for direct admissions to the second year of engineering had been put up by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on Saturday. “As part of the process we had to get a draft of Rs 5,000 and submit it at the designated Admission Report Centres (ARC) in the city. However, as banks were closed from Saturday to Monday, we could manage to get the demand draft done only on Tuesday and reached the ARC on Wednesday,” said the student who did not wished to be named.
However, with ARCs being few in the city, there was a mad rush for admission on Wednesday morning as thousands of aspirants gathered at the centres in the hope of securing a seat in the engineering college allotted to them.
“The DTE site mentioned three ARCs in Mumbai — Somaiya College, VJTI and ICT both at Matunga. But officials at Somaiya and VJTI said they would be processing applications of only 150 students. As the last date for admission is August 18 the remaining students were panic-stricken,” said another student.
