Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis gave an assurance in the state Assembly that work on the “waste to energy” project at Deonar dumping ground would begin soon.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis gave an assurance in the state Assembly that work on the “waste to energy” project at Deonar dumping ground would begin soon. He also said that no permission would be given to new dumping grounds unless waste was scientifically processed. The CM further said that BMC would be instructed to strictly implement waste segregation so that processing became easy.

“We have finalised the ‘waste to energy’ project at Deonar dumping ground. There are technologies available for this and tenders will be moved in three months. Also, we have given rights to MERC to purchase power and expect the Centre to give some subsidy on buying this power,” said Mr Fadnavis in a reply on the Deonar dumping ground that recently caught fire, polluting the environment. Mr Fadnavis gave an assurance about a monitoring system for the dumping ground as well as filling up the post of chief engineer of the BMC’s solid waste department within a month’s time. On the subject of opposition from locals to the Deonar dumping ground, Mr Fadnavis said no new dumping ground would come up without the assurance of the scientific processing of waste.

He even said that it would be made compulsory for societies to segregate waste for better management. He said that while such efforts were already underway on the part of the municipal corporations, “Housing societies should segregate dry and wet waste.”Leader of the Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, demanded a CID probe into the Deonar fire. Parts of the megapolis had been engulfed in a thick blanket of smog for days after fire broke out at the Deonar dumping ground on January 28. While Mr Fadnavis did not refuse the demand, he said a report had already been sought by an additional CP level officer on the Deonar fire. “If the report is not satisfactory, we can then initiate a CID probe,” he said.
