The rising instances of indiscriminate exploitation of parents by school managements in the form of demanding donations, capitation fees, fee hikes and commercialisation of education has prompted an NGO to start a social media campaign on Facebook. According to the NGO, the purpose of the campaign is to encourage people to come forward with complaints without fear of retribution from schools as well as use the platform to escalate the issue with the judiciary and government.

Jayant Jain, president of Forum for Fairness in Education (FFE), said that for too long parents have been used by school managements to recover enormous amounts of cash from the time the child secures an admission to the school till the time they pass out. “Parents have no option but to suffer the excesses of the school managements silently as raising a voice of dissent will result in their child being removed from the school or facing harassment while at school,” said Mr Jain.

He added that parents who protest the arbitrary approach of the schools have little or no support and hence, end up getting victimised. “The fear of having their child removed from school forces many parents to quietly accept the high-handedness of the schools. So, we decided to go the social media way as it will not only have a larger reach but also give parents a chance to voice their complaints without fear of their child being victimised,” said Mr Jain.
