Off-duty cops chase thief, retrieve bag containing Rs 1 lakh

Two young off-duty constables have made the Mumbai police force proud by chasing a robber who had stolen a bag containing Rs 1 lakh in the tiny and congested streets of Khetwadi area in south Mumbai.

Two young off-duty constables have made the Mumbai police force proud by chasing a robber who had stolen a bag containing Rs 1 lakh in the tiny and congested streets of Khetwadi area in south Mumbai. These duo dragged the robber to VP Road police station where the case was registered. Officials are checking if the accused had committed similar crimes in the past.

The police has decided to reward the men, Anant Shirsat (26) and Abhijeet Rajendra Salukhe (28). DCP (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni, spokesperson of Mumbai police, said, “We are proud of our men and those who do the extraordinary will get rewarded by the force.”

The incident took place on Wednesday around 9 pm when Shirsat and Salukhe, who are roommates, were starting their bikes to go to the market after they returned from their day duty. Suddenly they heard some one screaming ‘Chor Chor’ after which the duo rushed to help, noticing that a 22-year-old was fleeing the spot with a bag in his hand. A chase ensued and the thief was handed over to the local VP Road police.

Shirsat joined the force in 2011, and is in the LA3 department (Worli headquarters). Earlier he was part of the security of CM’s residence Varsha Bungalow. Salunkhe is working as a constable in the BKC police station.

Recalling the chase, Shirsath told The Asian Age, “We chased the robber for 50 metres after which he got scared and threw the bag. By its owner arrived to get the bag, we had nabbed the robber.”

According to officials, the accused had a chopper. Sanjay Kamble, senior police inspector of VP road police station said, “The accused has been identified as Sakhir Sukha Ansari (22), a resident of Azad Nagar slums of Panvel. Ansari runs a fruit business in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai.
