The property cell of the Mumbai police crime branch has detected a case where a newly married couple was selling stolen mobile phones on OLX, an online advertising platform.
To ensure that the customer does not suspect that the phones are stolen, the couple also forged bills of their purchase. Further, they advertised with different contact numbers on different advertisements to evade detection. Around 65 SIM cards and eight mobile phones have been recovered from them.
The ploy was discovered while the police was investigating a case of mobile phone theft. Based on technical surveillance, a crime branch official PSI Deep Bane found out that the person using the stolen phone had bought it from OLX. The Santa Cruz police informed the current owner of the phone Suraj Sukhram Shukla that the phone he was using was stolen last December.
To prove his innocence, Shukla showed them a bill of Rs 13,000 that was given to him by the culprits. After probing further, the officials zeroed down on the two accused Rajnish Bhaskar Sharma alias Navin (25) and his wife Sadhna (23), residents of Kamothe in Navi Mumbai. The couple got married last year and keep changing their address and live on rent, said sources from the police.
Commenting on the case deputy commissioner of police, crime, Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “Apart from the SIM cards and mobile phones, we have also found rubber stamps used to create fake bills. We will take action against them for obtaining 65 SIM cards through illegal means.” Sources said that the SIM cards belong to Idea, Docomo and Airtel.
Sadhna has a total of four cases of mobile snatching against her — one is at Malad police station and three at Vasai police station. She was out on bail. She used to steal wearing a burkha in crowded places. The duo has been remanded to police custody till February 17. The police is now checking if Rajnish has a crime record too, or not.
