Drunk policeman rams into shanties, injuring 1

A police constable was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and injuring a pedestrian in the Dockyard area.

A police constable was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and injuring a pedestrian in the Dockyard area. The constable was allegedly driving his private vehicle and after knocking down the pedestrian, he rammed into some shanties and fled the scene.

The arrested police personnel has been identified as Ganesh Pawar (26) posted with the local arms division of the Mumbai police.

According to officials at the Byculla police station, at the time of the incident, Pawar was off duty and was returning home in Byculla after meeting some of his friends. “The incident took place near the Dockyard road railway station at about 10.30 pm,” said senior police inspector Avinash Shingte, Byculla police station. The pedestrian has been identified as Dharmendra Singh who has suffered injuries.

After knocking down Mr Singh, Pawar did not stop, instead sped ahead and rammed his vehicle into some shanties by the road. “Even then he did not stop and ran away to his house nearby, leaving his car behind,” said another officer.

Pawar was later nabbed by the slum dwellers. “He was hiding in his house in the nearby police residential quarters and the slum dwellers brought him to the police station,” said an officer.

“We identified him on the basis of documents which we found in his car, after which we arrested him. He was drunk at the time of the incident,” said senior police inspector Avinash Shingte, Byculla police station.

Mr Shingte further added that Pawar’s blood samples have been sent to the hospital to determine the level of intoxication. He has been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and also section for drunk and drive (Section 185) under the Motor Vehicles Act.
