A 23-year-old youth, who was reportedly driving his bike under the influence of alcohol, has been arrested after he tried to outsmart a police constable at a nakabandi during a drunk-drive campaign by trying to flee the spot and injuring the latter in the process at Bandra (west) late on Monday night.

According to the Bandra police, the accused Shiva Manswami Velar is a Khar resident and works for a private firm. He had left from his Khar residence to go to Tardeo on his Bajaj Pulsar bike. Velar was wearing a helmet but was driving under the influence of alcohol and was not carrying his driving licence.

Velar was taken by surprise when the Bandra traffic police constables stopped him at a nakabandi at Jarimari temple, Bandra talao on SV Road around 11.40. Velar was reeking of alcohol.

On seeing the policemen, Velar stopped his bike. The on-duty police constable Mahendra Darekar (34) went up to him and caught the bike’s handle, but when Darekar tried to get behind the bike to read its registration number, Velar accelerated his bike and tried to speed away. Darekar who caught his bike got dragged and suffered a minor injury on his leg. Other constables however managed to nab Velar. A medical test proved he was drunk.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code and 184 (driving dangerously), 185 (driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs) of the Motor Vehicle Act.

He was produced before a magistrate’s court and released on bail. Darekar has been treated for his injuries and discharged from a hospital.
