Drug haul: Bail plea of accused rejected

The Thane sessions court has rejected the anticipatory bail of Sushil Kumar, an accused who had not been arrested in the multi-crore Ephedrine case in which Mamta Kulkarni was named as the main accuse

The Thane sessions court has rejected the anticipatory bail of Sushil Kumar, an accused who had not been arrested in the multi-crore Ephedrine case in which Mamta Kulkarni was named as the main accused. Meanwhile, according some reports, Pakistani and Sri Lankan nationals could be involved in the case.

On Tuesday while public prosecutor Shishir Hiray argued that the bail applications of four accused in the case be rejected, he mentioned that letters of United States’ Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have mentioned that the racket was not limited to India and not only Indians but also Sri Lankans and Pakistanis were involved, and they had been in contact with Kulkarni’s husband and main accused Vicky Goswami.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) are also working in the case as the case is so important and therefore bail should not granted, the public prosecutor said.

Sources said, “The DEA received call records and conversations in which some accused clearly speak about the involvement of Pakistanis and Sri Lankans. If the Thane police discover anything related to this, they will inform the CBI and NCB about the same.”

The DEA has joined the Thane police in their investigation into an international drug racket after the seizure of 20.5 tonnes of the banned drug Ephedrine by the latter.

In all, there were 17 accused in the case, of whom seven are still at large. The others were arrested and are now in judicial custody.
