Responding to media reports of two of the terrorists in the recent Dhaka carnage following Indian Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik, his lawyer Mubin Solkar has said that they will sue newspapers for publishing such distorted facts as Dr Naik never supported terrorism and is not banned in Malaysia.
According to media reports, two of the mass killers — Nibras Islam and Rohan Imtiaz — claimed to have been inspired by Dr Naik and Bengaluru-based Islamic State (IS) propagandist Mehdi Masroor Biswas, who is currently in prison.
However, advocate Solkar, while speaking to The Asian Age, said that the reports were defamatory and made false remarks against Dr Naik. “There is nothing about this guy (Dr Naik) ever supporting terrorism,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of Dr Naik, advocate Solkar said that the news reports gave the impression that Dr Naik supported terrorism; however he claimed that he “was deliberately quoted out of context to show him in poor light and prove he is an extremist, which is totally irresponsible on the part of the newspaper. We will definitely sue them for damages and clarification.”
Advocate Solkar also said that the report that Dr Naik was banned in Malaysia was also false.
“In fact, he has been honoured with one of the highest civilian awards by the Malaysian government,” he said.
