Air travel in the domestic sector has registered an impressive growth of 23 per cent till July, when compared to last year.
The passenger data prepared by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to which The Asian Age has an access, shows that while year 2015 registered a growth of approximately 15 per cent, in 2014, the growth was 9 per cent.
This means air travel in the domestic sector has been maintaining steady growth every year.
“Owing to frequent air fare schemes and increasing regional connectivity, many prefer to take a flight rather than a train or bus. In a few sectors, the railways first class fare and air fare are almost on par,” said a DGCA official who did not wish to be named.
The data provided by DGCA reveals that in 2013, a total of six crore air travellers were recorded on the domestic routes; in 2014, it was 6.7 crore and in 2015 it was 7.3 crore.
In 2016, the number of air travellers has already crossed the 4.5 crore mark. “Currently, small cities in north India are well connected through air. This has created a huge impact. This year, almost eight lakh people travelled from Mumbai to Lucknow and Varanasi,” said the fficial.
