On the topic of a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) notice issued to Mumbai police in connection with alleged harassment of a Canadian businessman, the latter has said they are yet to receive the notice and appropriate action would be taken once they receive it.
According to the NHRC website, the commission had sent notice to Mumbai Police on March 3 in connection with a complaint filed by a Canadian national, who alleged that he was harassed by a group of policemen from Mumbai, especially south Mumbai. Jaimini Kumar Srivastava, deputy director (media and communication), NHRC, confirmed that the commission had issued a notice to the Mumbai police, however no action had been taken yet.
On that note, Mumbai police PRO, CID DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “We haven’t received any notice from NHRC. Once we receive it, we will have to examine it and then will we be able to start investigation into the matter. We will definitely take necessary action against those found guilty.”
In his complaint, Canadian national, Alnoor Jamal, alleged that on August 29, 2013, some police officials directly entered his room at Hotel Marine Plaza in south Mumbai. They threatened him to settle the dispute with his business partner, Shobhit Rajan, else face immediate arrest. Official sources said after this incident, Mr Jamal approached NHRC in February with a complaint against 16 persons, 13 of whom are policemen holding various ranks in the Mumbai police.
