Dialyses in private centres could be limited to 3 per day

The state government is considering restricting the number of dialyses allowed in private centres to three in a day.

The state government is considering restricting the number of dialyses allowed in private centres to three in a day. The health ministry had a discussion on framing the guidelines for dialysis centre on Monday at Mantralaya. It would be implemented within three months, said Dr Deepak Sawant, minister for public health.

The meeting to frame the policy for dialysis centres was held on Monday and chaired by Dr Sawant. There were some complaints received with the ministry regarding careless handling of patients by such centres.

“We have received complaints about lack of standard parameters at dialysis centres and, hence, we think that there should be a monitoring mechanism over dialysis centres in favour of the patients,” said Dr Sawant.

He said that in order to offer better services to patients, his department had suo motto decided to frame guidelines for such centres.

According to Dr Sawant, there are very few nephrologists to cater to the number of patients that approach these private centres for dialysis.

“There is a need to increase the number of technical staff but before that number of nephorologists should be increased,” the minister said.

“While looking after the patient, the atmosphere and the standard parameters should be followed by the private centres. “At present, such centres handle more than three patients in a day and the standard time to dialysis a patient is 3.30 hours. But several times, each patient is not given more than two and a half hour,” Dr Sawant said.

The guideline is also set to limit the use of each dialyser to eight patients. Dr Sawant also assured that the new guidelines will be implemented within three months.
