Appealing to the Jain community to help drought-affected farmers in Marathwada region, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday asked it to start programmes to help cows survive.

Non-violence is a fundamental principle of Jainism, and Mr Fadnavis said his government’s decision to prevent slaughter of cow progeny was to spread affection towards animals in society.

He was speaking on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Jain Tirthankara Mahavir.

“The Jain community’s contribution to the economic growth of the country is valuable. The community believes in contributing towards society and initiates various social programmes. The Marathwada region is reeling under drought and I appeal to you to start programmes to save cows in the region. This will help serve cows and help the farmers also,” Mr Fadnavis said.

The CM said reduction in the number of cattle affects agriculture and the state was currently, facing agriculture crisis. The government has banned slaughter of cow progeny two years ago and had promised farmers it would help take care of the cattle by building shelters in the state.

The statement from the CM came in the backdrop of severe drought in the Marathwada region, with only three per cent water storage left in the region. On the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, Mr Fadnavis also praised the Jain Tithankara for his contribution in conservation of environment.
