Even as several civic officials are in the line of fire for their alleged involvement in the road scam, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has now turned the heat up for officials involved in the nullah desilting scam as well that surfaced after the deluge last monsoon. The BMC will now send notices to over 80 officials suspected of their involvement in the nullah desilting scam. These notices would be sent out by next month, following the end of an internal enquiry to determine the charges against them, claimed sources.

This move has brought several officials from the storm water drains department, the vigilance department and the accounts department under the scanner.

Commenting on this, R.V. Danane, the chief officer of the enquiries department, said, “The internal enquiry against the officials is underway. It will help us determine the level of involvement of these officials in the scam. Based on the enquiry report, we will send out notices and penalise the officials on the basis of the gravity of charges levelled against them.”

Mr Danane said that most of the charges would be on the lines of ignorance, lack of supervision and failure to oversee the task at hand. Following the notices, an enquiry is supposed to verify the charges against the officials and penalise them. “Not all officials will face suspension. The department will cease to function if every official is suspended. But there are varying degrees of punishments that involve suspension, fines, demotions and stopping of increments.”

Earlier, the enquiries department had sent notices to 14 officials involved in the desilting scam. Mr Danane confirmed that their cases are being reviewed by a committee.
