Doctors at the civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel successfully transplanted the liver of a 67-year-old woman to a 56-year-old man, on Thursday; this is the third liver transplant of the hospital and the 77th in Mumbai this year.
According to Dr Avinash Supe, dean, KEM Hospital, “The donor, who is from Airoli district in Thane, was declared brain-dead on Wednesday as she suffered a brain hemorrhage. She was rushed to KEM hospital. The donor’s medical test evaluation suggested that we could not use the heart and the kidneys, but the liver was in good condition.”
“From this cadaver donation, KEM Hospital conducted its third liver transplant of a patient who is of 56-year-old from Goregaon, and he was stable after the transplant operation. The patient, who was suffering from cirrhosis, was in need of a liver. The procedure done at our hospital is primarily cheaper because doctors’ fee and hospital admission charges were far less than that of private ones,”added Dr Supe.
The patients who register for liver transplants in KEM Hospital are mostly those who cannot afford expensive procedures. The cost of the transplant at KEM Hospital has been subsidised to about Rs 5–6 lakh.
