After the city witnessed moderate rainfall of 3.5 mm recorded by the weather department in Colaba and about 36 mm recorded by the department in Santa Cruz, the city mainly remained flood free, even though some parts experienced minor flooding.
The civic body had identified 270 waterlogging spots in the city of which 66 are chronic in nature, but none reported water logging.
Although certain pockets in the city around Bandra station, Gautam Nagar in Jogeshwari, and Mahim Causeway experienced minor flooding, no untoward incident was reported.
From the total of 293 pumps set up in 208 locations in the city to deal with water logging, the BMC had to start only two pumps in the city — one on MG road, Dharavi, and the other at Dhobi Ghat.
The Hindamata area in Dadar, notorious for its flood every monsoon remained flood free. Official sources said, “There are several conventional flooding spots in the city, including Hindmata, Dadar and the Bramhanwadi culvert at Kurla. This spot in the L ward floods and disrupts the Central Railways, even during moderate rainfall. However, this time we took care with the desilting of this culvert on both sides of the railway lines and no water logging was reported.”
None of the city’s subways reported water logging, and no incidents of traffic jams were registered either.
Meanwhile, activists have pointed out that flooding happened in the most obvious areas despite BMC’s preventive measures. Godfrey Pimenta of Watchdog Foundation said, “Several areas around Marol and Andheri were severely water logged. The area around Seven Hills hospital for example was flooded. This speaks poorly of the BMC’s desilting efforts.”
