National Crime Records Bureau data has revealed Maharashtra came second only to Uttar Pradesh with regard to cases of cybercrime in 2015, with these totalling 2,195. The data was released as part of its annual compendium, Crime in India.
UP had 2,208 cases, while Karnataka ranked third with 1,447 cases and Rajasthan fourth with 949 cases. Further, Maharashtra has seen a 16.8 per cent increase in cybercrime from 2014 to 2015, with 1,879 cases recorded in 2014. Mumbai cyber police revealed that while debit card frauds make up a majority of these cases, an increase is also being witnessed in the number of people duped by fake profiles on matrimonial websites.
Sachin Patil, deputy commissioner of police (cyber) told The Asian Age, “The majority of crimes reported are of cloning in ATM kiosks. Debit card cloning is very rampant, leading to people losing huge amounts of money after they have carried out transactions. Phishing mails are sent to users guised as survey links, discount offers, new deals or simply as mails offering information about a product for which their details are needed. Many naïve users enter their details, including account details, verification codes, card numbers and fall prey to such mails.”
