To ensure a safer Diwali, the Mumbai Customs Department has surveyed all shops selling fire crackers in the city and found that none of them is selling Chinese crackers illegally. A.K. Jyotishi, Principal Commissioner of Customs Preventive Unit, said, “If anybody finds anyone selling Chinese fire crackers, they can tell us or their nearest customs or central excise office. We will take necessary action.”

According to market analysts, Chinese firecrackers emanate a lot of light and sound but they also hamper sales of indigenous firecrackers. Not only are they illegal, they also cause a lot of side effects. Renowned cardiologist Dr Vijay Surase said, “They contain mercury, lead, carbon, radium and potassium chloride that can cause personality disorders, weak eye sight, and lung problems in kids and anaemia and asthma in adults. Leftovers get drained into the sea.”
