The Dharavi police registered a cross FIR against two different groups, who clashed over the suicide of Rohith Vemula, a PhD student from a backward community. Though the rally organisers claimed RSS activists attacked them, the police said that so far they did not have any information to confirm it.
On January 24, the Nationalist Group arranged a youngsters rally.
“Around 500 people had gathered in Mumbai’s Dharavi area to protest against the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad. The situation went out of control when another group situated in the same area reportedly attacked the protesters on Sunday evening. In the attack, eight students got injured, including two girls. After the attack, the protesters alleged that the attackers were from
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),” said a police officer.
One of the protesters, Vrushali Potdar, said, “We were attacked near Peela Bungalow on 90 feet road. A few men were already lying in wait for us before we reached the spot. They attacked our group members with bamboo sticks. A few youngsters suffered head injuries. At the time of going to press, six attackers had been detained by the police.”
Dharavi senior PI, Jayram More said, “We have registered a case under IPC section related to riot with atrocity and molestation. The group who attacked the protesters also gave us a complaint saying they were behaving badly in public. We are investigation whether these protesters are from RSS or not. We will arrest the culprits soon.”
